SPAGIO’s 30-year history is tied to the arrival of Chef Hubert Seifert, and his wife Helga, to the United States with two suitcases in hand. Their dream was to share their passion for high quality, delicious food using the freshest ingredients found around the globe. At the time, Grandview was a quiet, affordable neighborhood close to downtown. They first opened a delicatessen named Gourmet Market (at our current location) that sold homemade fresh breads, pastries, salads, hard to find deli meats & cheeses, as well as a treasure trove of food products to delight all gourmands. Although this offering of food was way ahead of its time, customers fell in love and wanted more. The Seiferts embraced the idea and opened a dining room that served gourmet European fare. The 80’s brought about a desire for healthier food, which drove another expansion and the birth of SPAGIO. They built Columbus’ first wood-burning oven that featured a wide selection of heart-healthy spa cuisine. Thus inspiring the name SPAGIO (SPA= good healthy food; GIO= from all around the world). The menu has continued to evolve but the main focus has never changed: provide world-class cuisine and a high standard of service in a relaxed, yet sophisticated atmosphere.
To satisfy the public’s desire for a truly gourmet experience, Chef Hubert created Aubergine Private Dining Club, an intimate one-of-a kind culinary experience located just steps from SPAGIO. Members enjoy menus created exclusively suited to their tastes.
In 1997, SPAGIO Wine Lounge opened offering thousands of wine labels and beer from around the globe. It has evolved into a comfortable gathering spot to enjoy small plates paired with a taste, glass or bottle of your favorite beverage.

Chef Hubert Seifert was born in Aachen, Germany, beginning his culinary apprenticeship at the age of 14. His talents have taken him to all corners of the globe including stops at Brenner's Park Hotel in Baden-Baden, Pierre Troisgros in Lyon, L'Auberge D'll in Alsace, the summer residence of the royal family of Spain in Palma de Mallorca and Orthon Hotels in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Stateside, Chef Hubert has participated in cooking at the nation’s bicentennial with honorary guests President Reagan and Lee Iacocca, as well as, the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
SPAGIO is community. The Seifert family recognizes that success within a community includes a responsibility to support local needs. Chef Hubert Seifert donates his time, talent and financially supports the following organizations: Nationwide Children’s Hospital Hospice, Adventures for Wish Kids, Big Brother-Big Sister, COSI (Center for Science and Industry), American Lung Association, Opera Columbus, Ballet Met, King Arts Complex and the Susan G. Komen Foundation, to name a few.
Chef is passionate about education and is a board member of the Hocking College McClenaghan Center for Hospitality and ECOT (Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow). He also helped develop the curriculum of the Culinary Apprenticeship Program at Columbus State Community College. In recognition of all these efforts, SPAGIO received the 2010 “Good Neighbor” award by the National Restaurant Association.
